Diary of a Cakemaker #20

Diary of a Cakemaker #20

20th Sep 2023

Hi there! This week has been a good one, not overly eventful but interesting nonetheless.

We had a busy start, with lots of prepping for the weekend. There were two wedding cakes to prepare — one was a peacock cake! The head and body were made of cake and then cupcakes to make the tail feathers. Pretty cool!

In the middle of the week, Julie came in to the Cakery to ask if we could do a particular order for next Monday.

I can’t tell you what it was for, but let’s put it this way — it would be the single largest order we have ever done to date! To be honest, I thought she was being silly or sarcastic so although I was thinking, ‘Are you nuts?’ I said, ‘Sure, why not?!’

The email response we sent then bounced, so by this point I was sure it was a scam or a joke, it was a lot to spend! However, the next day the customer called again to confirm, and we have taken on our mega-order to be delivered next Monday!

On Saturday, I went for my first ever park run at Stonehaven. It was hard and hilly. I remember half way through the race, thinking “I’m never doing this again” ?, but I did as always feel good afterwards.

On Saturday we had a wedding cake tasting event, we hold these events for couples who have booked with us and have a wedding date set in the next 6 to 9 months. They come to us for a consultation, taste some different cake flavours and choose which ones they would like, and discuss and sketch out design ideas. It’s a great experience, they get to make some important decisions and tick those off their wedding day to-do list!

Sunday was a busy one, it started with an unexpected phone call from my sister asking me to help her with something. I dashed round, and was there for 3 whole hours — the things you do for family, eh?

Then I whizzed back home to get ready for church, then sped off to fetch the peacock cake and cupcakes to deliver and set up at the wedding venue.

Once I got home, it was batch cooking day! ?? So, about every 2 to 3 months, I do a HUGE load of batch cooking and it keeps us going (you know, with the odd quick pasta or chicken dish in between) for ages. I prepared a lot of meats, stews and bases for sauces for the all the main dishes we like.

It was a pretty EPIC task, I started at about 3.30pm and finished at 11pm! The freezer is now as full as a freezer can be!

After that, without a shadow of a doubt, I was ready for my bed.

The week ahead is looking good (not least because of our whopping corporate order), I’m ready and raring for it!

Well, now that I’ve had a good sleep I am!
