Diary of a Cakemaker #15

9th Aug 2023

When it comes to all things cake, it has been going pretty well these last few weeks. We have been busy busy busy (as usual)! ? Between corporate orders and one-to-one classes, weddings and team building, we have been happily creating a lot of cake-y goodness!

For me, the last couple of weeks have not been quite so good. Remember how I am currently off tennis due to injury, and how much I had been enjoying running instead to keep active? Well, it turns out there can be too much of a good thing (unless it is cake of course!) and I have hurt both ankles from overdoing the running! Gah!

I love to keep physically active (it offsets the cake for one), I find it’s great for both my physical and mental wellbeing, so it has been a bit of a bugger not being able to get stuck in. I got myself some new running shoes so hopefully that should help minimise injury. I’m slowly getting back to running, but trying not to go overboard ...

On Friday I went hiking up Bynack More with the “Usana Walk and Talk group”— what fabulous views! It was about a 6.5 hour walk all in, plus a 6-hour drive there and back, so a pretty long day. Strangely, I didn’t feel tired though! I made sure that I had a hot bath when I got home — can’t risk another injury!

On Saturday I went to my friend's wedding, so I didn’t just make the cake (always that extra level of pressure when you want it to be perfect for a friend!) I was a guest too! It was a beautiful wedding at the Fasque Castle. It was another long day though, I was shattered when we got home. I don’t know why I wore heels!!! My calves were in agony by the end of the day ( I guess all day hiking the day before certainly didn’t help). On Sunday after church, I spent most of the day in my bed — recharging my batteries!

This week is our second school holiday Cupcake Camp.  4 hours -children, cupcakes and fun, what more could you ask for?! I always like to see how well the kids do with their cake decorating, and how proud they are when they show their finished creations to their parents. “Show” being the operative word, they are usually a little less keen to share!

I am off with my kids this week and looking forward to doing some sightseeing. We are heading to Dundee first to go to Wildshore Water Park, which looks great fun! Then we are off to Edinburgh to check out the Fringe Festival and to Falkirk for the Falkirk Wheel. A road trip of the east coast to explore!

I would say I will be back after a restful week off, but somehow, I don’t think I will be doing too much resting! Don't worry, I will still be back raring to get baking. See you soon!
